The eight-storey Grosvenor House Hotel is 500 metres from Marble Arch Underground station and Oxford Street, and half a mile from Buckingham Palace. The 446 guestrooms are decorated in neutral colours, accented with cushions, curtains and bedspreads in stronger hues. The rooms feature furnishings in mahogany, walnut or cherry, and include cable television, multi-line phones, and safes. Bathrooms are clad in sandstone and granite and include telephones, bathrobes, and heated towel racks.
The 65-foot pool at the Grosvenor House is one of the largest hotel pools in London, while the nearby fitness centre has yoga and Pilates instructors, a massage therapist, two hydrotherapy spa pools, a beauty salon, and a café serving beverages and light snacks. The Park Room is a brasserie-style restaurant divided into a formal dining room; a more casual lounge area; and a library with walnut panelling, Persian rugs, and a grand piano. The Red Bar features red lacquered walls, mirrored columns, and a richly coloured Asian tapestry, evoking a 1930s atmosphere, while the split-level Terrazza Bar and Restaurant has an Art Deco feel. The hotel houses meeting and conference facilities able to accommodate up to 1,500 people, and offers secretarial support and audio-visual equipment. The hotel's entry plaza houses several designer shops. Famous for its hotels, the Mayfair area holds London's most expensive homes and, on Bond Street, half a mile away, its most expensive shops. But the tucked-away pubs, restaurants, and local shops of atmospheric Shepherd's Market, also within half a mile, offer affordable local colour too. Created in 1730 by damming the Westbourne River, the Serpentine in Hyde Park (across the street) is the setting for many sports and cultural activities. In summer, guests can rent boats, and swimming is allowed in designated areas. In-line skaters zip along the banks, and the nearby Orangery hosts art exhibitions. London Heathrow Airport is 18 miles away and can be reached by car in approximately 50 minutes.
Renovation Notice:
This hotel will be undergoing a complete restoration, beginning May, 2005. The current scaffolding surrounding the building for work on the exterior brickwork and windows will reduce over the summer as this part of the project draws to a close.
Phase I - May, 2005
From the middle of May, the Park Street entrances will close whilst the library, hotel lobby and reception refurbishment commences. The restaurant facility will move to La Terrazza where breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be served daily. The Park Room will then become the hotel reception area, and, during this time, two of the lobby lifts will be out of commission. Guest arrivals/check-in will be via the Park Lane entrance, and taxi rank and luggage arrivals will be located on Upper Grosvenor Street.
Phase II - August, 2005
Refurbishment to the Ballroom, Court Suite and Mount Street meeting rooms will be complete.
Phase III - From December, 2005
From December, the Red Bar will close for refurbishment together with the Park Room, La Terrazza, and the two remaining lobby lifts. The Library, hotel lobby, and reception refurbishment will not be complete; the two restored lifts will return to commission. The entrance to the hotel for guests checking in will now be the Park Street Entrance only. The restaurant will then relocate to the Gallery Restaurant which is adjacent to the hotel lifts and accessed from the hotel lobby.
Guestroom restoration
Restoration of hotel guestrooms will begin in early May 2005 and continue until spring, 2007. During this time, the inventory of guestrooms will reduce periodically to 179 thereby severely limiting availability over busy periods. Early bookings are advised. At this time, the health club will also close and the gym equipment will be moved to a new area until spring, 2006.
Summer 2006
The hotel will start to return to normal service at this point.
