The Palace of Knossos is situated southeast of Iraklio, in a magically superb location, and out of all Crete's outstanding Minoan sites it is the most evocative and elaborate. Thanks to Sir Arthur Evans, who discovered the palace, we are given an impression of how the palace once looked due to the reconstruction of certain sections, and replicas of Minoan frescoes have been strategically positioned to immerse the palace with the artistic spirit of these amazing people. The spectacular, unpretentious and skilfully symmetrical throne in the Throne Room should not be missed. Arrive early in the morning to miss the crowds and allow for a few hours to explore.
