Athens Sights, Sounds and Hotels
In 1930, Antoine Benaki put together a museum from his family house and offered it to Greece. Thus the Benaki Museum, the oldest private museum and also one of top museums in Greece, was born. The museum has a lavish and diverse collection from all over Europe and Asia on display, as well as Bronze Age finds from Mycenae and Thessaly, ecclesiastical furniture brought by refuges from Asia Minor and two early works by El Greco. There is also a collection of pottery, copper, silver and woodwork from Egypt, Asia Minor and Mesopotamia, and an eye-catching collection of Greek costumes.
Athens Benaki Museum functions not only to preserve its extensive collections, but plays a role in serving more than one social need by providing activities for the people of Athens. Well worth a visit! The fantastic Athens hotels will prove to serve your needs and ensure your return to this thriving metropolis.
